Indy Nips Jacksonville As NFL Season Gets Underway
The often maligned Indianapolis Colts defense matched the ferocity of their Jacksonville Jaguars counterparts play for play, and one touchdown pass from Peyton Manning proved to be enough to earn victory by a 14-12 margin in the NFL season opener for both teams. The victory was Manning’s 118th in a Colts uniform, tying the legendary Johnny Unitas for the franchise lead. Unitas, of course, was the personification of the franchise during their years in Baltimore.
NFL sports betting enthusiasts who took the Jaguars as +6 road underdogs were rewarded with the pointspread cover. Indianapolis dropped to 11-16 ATS over the past three years when favored. The 26 combined points went well UNDER the posted total of 45. Despite their reputation as an offensive juggernaut, the Colts have actually trended to the UNDER over the past three seasons, with 19 UNDERs in their past 35 lined games. The Jaguars, conversely, have a slight edge to the OVER in that span with a 19-14 mark over the past three years. Thats somewhat counterintuitive for a team best known for their defense.
After the contest, Manning displayed his characteristic humility when asked about tying the franchise mark for wins and particularly comparisons to the iconic Unitas:
“I’ve never felt comfortable with comparisons with him. I think he’s kind of in his own category. But I am proud of those wins.”
Manning was more concerned about the welfare of receiver Anthony Gonzalez who left late in the first quarter with an injury:
“I asked Rashean Matthis what happened and he said, ‘I didn’t even touch him . He has worked so hard in the offseason, I just hope it’s not a season-ending injury.”
Colts coach Jim Caldwell won his first game at the helm of an NFL team, and gave credit to his defense:
“Obviously, the defense played well and came up big at the end. We thought it would be a grind, and it was. I think our team certainly played tough, played hard, played with a lot of energy.”
Jacksonville wasnt overly discouraged after the contest either, pleased with the intensity and their effectiveness in shutting down one of the NFLs best offenses. Maurice Jones-Drew praised the tenacious Indy defense after the game:
“They just did a great job in the red zone stifling our offense. My hat’s off to them. But we have to learn how to finish.”
Quarterback David Garrard also paid respect to his opponent’s pass rush:
“I thought, ‘Here we go again, we have a great chance. You love to be in that situation. We were trying to get the ball to Maurice, but you’ve got to slow those pass rushers down. We did what we could do.”
The Jaguars will open their 2009 NFL home slate on Sunday as they host the Arizona Cardinals. Theyll travel to Houston for a game against the Texans the following week. The Colts will head to south Florida for a game against the Miami Dolphins on Monday night.

Sweden’s Heavyweight Boxing Champ Ingemar Johansson
Former world heavyweight boxing champion Ingemar Johannson died at a nursing home in his native Kungsbacka, Sweden at the age of 76 early in 2009. No official cause of death was given, but Johansson recently returned to the nursing home after a difficult bout with pneumonia. Johansson had moved to the nursing home on the Swedish coast from Stockholm over ten years ago after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Johannson rocketed to international fame and rock star like superstardom in Sweden by virtue of his 3rd round knockout victory over Floyd Patterson on June 26,’59 to become only the 5th heavyweight champion born outside of the US. Johannson was considered the underdog going into the matchup, and due to the perception that he wasn’t training particularly hard entered the bout a 5/1 underdog. Johansson was frequently seen in Catskill nightspots during his training camp with his attractive young secretary in stark contrast to Patterson’s disciplined regimen in preparation for his title defense.
While his training methods may not have been particularly disciplined, his performance in the Yankee Stadium fight made up for it. After a tentative first two rounds, Johannson floored Patterson with a quick right hand early in the third. As there was no ‘three knockdown’ rule in effect, Johannson would eventually knock Patterson down a total of seven times before referee Ruby Goldstein stopped the fight and awarded him the victory.
Johannson would hold the title for just under a year before he lost it back to Patterson in a rematch at the Polo Grounds in New York City. Patterson was the aggressor from the opening bell, and would eventually regain his title as he knocked Johannson out cold in the fifth round with a looping left hook. Displaying the class for which he became famous, Patterson was less concerned about celebrating his victory as he was for the well being of his opponent.
The two men would fight again later in the year, with an exciting slugfest transpiring before the superior conditioning of Patterson took over. Patterson would put his opponent away for good in the 6th round. After that, Johannson fought only four more times against nameless opponents in his native country before retiring in’63.
Patterson and Johannson remained close lifelong friends and would travel to visit each other every year until the American champion died in 2006. While it is commonplace today for former in-ring adversaries to become close personal friends(eg: Oscar De La Hoya and Shane Mosely, Mickey Ward and Arturo Gatti), it was less common in the’60s. Johannson remained a big star in Sweden, occasionally appearing in movies and enjoyed good health well into his 60’s when old age began to take its toll.
Johannson was married and divorced twice, and is survived by five children. Ingemar Johannson enjoyed rock star like status in Sweden during his title reign and remained a widely respected and admired sportsman throughout his life. He’ll be remembered by the international boxing community for the vital role he played in popularizing the sport in Europe and Scandinavia.

Career Advice- Taking Changes In Stride
Change is always a little scary. When it comes to jobs and careers, it can be even scarier because your financial security will depend on the changes that are taking place. Take the time to learn how to deal with change one step at a time and it might be a little more tolerable.
The workplace is perpetually altering and developing. Adopting these alterations even in the most idealistic circumstances could prove to be nerve-wracking. All the same, once those changes become damaging and include things suchlike layoffs, downsizing, and scrambling to keep the company functioning properly, even the most passive individual could easily become overpowered and distressed. In this troubled present time, the last thing that you want is additional strain, which is why you take toeducate yourself on how to adopt vocation alterations in good spirits, regardless how large or small-scale they might be. Concentrate on coming through today, and then worry about tomorrow once it arrives.
When you work for a company where you constantly see people getting laid off and let go because of the economy, it’s hard not to question your own job security. However, trust in the fact that you are still there, and start preparing yourself for the loss in case it does happen. You don’t need to panic. Really, that is the last thing that you want to do. Just try to remain calm, go home and prepare your resume and start gathering your resources for job hunting, and just carry on with your daily tasks at work as best you can. Don’t think that it can’t happen to you, but don’t let yourself become overwhelmed with worry because it might.
Many people who had the mentality that they could not be replaced are now learning very differently. In fact, it is usually not that they can be replaced but that there is no room for their jobs in the current economy. They are laid off from companies that they probably thought they’d spend their lives working for, and left to move on with their lives outside of that company. When it comes to changing jobs because of the economic situation, you probably aren’t going to be looking for your dream career. More likely is the situation where you’ll be looking for any job that can help you get by and pay the bills until something better comes along.
Whether the changes that you’re going through are related to company changes or losing your job, you need to be prepared. That is the only way to be able to take things in stride and avoid going into panic mode unnecessarily. Panic does you no good, so you should try to avoid it when you can. Instead, focus on the positive and figure out what you can do to improve your own situation and move on to the next thing in life, whether that’s a new job or a new role within your company. Japanese Pro Wrestling Legend Mitsuharu Misawa Remembered
Mitsuharu Misawa died in Hiroshima, Japan earlier this year less than a week before his 47th birthday. He was in a tag team match for his Pro Wrestling NOAH promotion with Go Shiozaki against Bison Smith and Akitoshi Saito. Saito hit a back suplex on Misawa, which appeared to knock him unconscious. Medical staff attempted to revive him in the ring, but when CPR failed he was taken to a hospital by ambulance. Initial reports in the Japanese media suggest that he was pronounced dead at the hospital, but a number of eyewitness accounts have speculated that he may have died in the ring.
That’s at least a small bit of solace amid the tragedy of Misawa’s death–he died in the ring doing what he loved, and what he did better than just about anyone on the planet. Misawa’s last moments were spent working the kind of brutally stiff, athletically realistic match that got a generation hooked on Japanese wrestling.
A top level amateur wrestler in high school, his skill gained the attention of All Japan Pro Wrestling president Shohei Giant Baba. Three years after his pro debut, he got his first big break in’84 when he was chosen as the second Tiger Mask replacing Satoru Sayama. In’90, he had his longtime friend and rival Toshiaki Kawada unmask him.
Misawa would wrestle as himself from then on, and become an even bigger star in the process. In June,’90 he became one of the top stars in All Japan Pro Wrestling when he defeated Jumbo Tsuruta. That match was his first main event appearance at the venue Cheap Trick made famous in America, the Nippon Budokan. He soon faced Triple Crown Champion Stan Hansen in an unsuccessful challenge for the title, and would become arguably the biggest native star in Japanese pro wrestling for the next decade.
Hed have legendary battles against Kawada, Hansen, Kenta Kobashi, Jun Akiyama and Steve Dr. Death Williams in singles competition. Hed also become a force on the tag team scene along with Kawada facing Williams and Terry Gordy along with Tsuruta and Akira Taue. Misawa would continue as a mainstay in AJPW until the early part of this decade. After the death of Giant Baba, he left to establish Pro Wrestling NOAH. He would serve as the companys president while wrestling a full time schedule until his death.
Japanese pro wrestling served as an introduction for many American fans into shoot fight sports and MMA. Before the Internet, fans would trade videotapes to stay up on the latest matches from Japan and along with Jushin Thunder Liger and The Great Muta Keiji Mutoh it safe to say that Misawa is one of the wrestlers most responsible for getting a generation of American fans hooked on the product. Were it not for the subculture he created in America, later wrestling promotions like Ring of Honor and MMA promotions like the UFC wouldn’t have had a ready made audience to tap into.

Portland Acquires Marcus Camby
The Portland Trailblazers have needed a big inside presence ever since starting center Greg Oden and backup Joel Pryzbilla went down with season ending injuries. They finally found one on Tuesday as they acquired veteran Marcus Camby from the Los Angeles Clippers. The Clippers received forward Travis Outlaw and guard Steve Blake.
The transaction also served to answer the nagging question about Portland’s point guard situation. Steve Blake and Andre Miller have shared time running the offense, but Blazers’ management apparently felt that Miller was a better fit with superstar shooting guard Brandon Roy. Ironically, until Miller picked up a lot of the offense slack lately with Roy on the shelf with a hamstring injury the presumption was that he’d be the one heading elsewhere as the NBA trade deadline approached.
All three players involved are in the final year of their current contract, meaning that barring anything unforeseen Camby’s career in Portland will probably last only 23 games plus the playoffs. Outlaw and Blake may or may not fit into the Clippers longterm plans-assuming that one of the NBA’s most consistently underachieving teams actually has ‘longterm plans’ in the first place.
Camby indicated that he was excited to be going to the Blazers:
“I think it’s a great situation for myself. It’s a first-class organization that really takes care of their own. I hope I can bring my knowledge of the game, and blend in these last 27 games. I’m really excited to be here.”
He talked about the strange situation of actually being in Portland when the trade went down:
“I only brought one change of clothes. It’s been a real rough, rough 24 hours for me, but real exciting at the same time.”
Camby also said that he’s interesting in staying in ‘Rip City’ longterm:
“Hopefully things work out for myself and work out for the team. Hopefully they have plans for me in the long term.”
Portland GM Kevin Pritchard added:
“We are very excited to bring an experienced big man of Marcus’ caliber to the team and we feel he’ll help us a great deal down the stretch run. He’s a fierce competitor and has been one of the league’s best defensive players for quite some time.”
The 35 year old Camby has long been considered one of the NBA’s best defensive big men. Despite playing on a LA Clippers team well off the playoff pace in the Western Conference, he’s second in the league in rebounds with 12.1 per game.

Free Agent Lamar Odom Returns To The Lakers
After a month long free agency soap opera, both Lamar Odom and the Los Angeles Lakers got what they really wanted all along. The Lakers retained the services of their valuable sixth man, and Odom will return to the team after an intense recruiting pitch from the Miami Heat. Odom officially signed his new contract with the NBA Champions and along with the addition of Ron Artest the Lakers may actually be stronger than last years title winning squad.
Terms of the deal werent immediately released, but both player and team appeared relieved that things had worked out. In early July, negotiations broke down after some miscommunication between Odom’s agent and Lakers’ owner Dr. Jerry Buss. While Odom worked to mend fences”including several personal phone calls to Dr. Buss”his agent was receiving interest from a number of teams. Miami, in particular, was extremely interest bringing out some heavy hitters including Dwayne Wade and Pat Riley to make a recruiting pitch.
Ultimately, however, Odom couldnt come up with a compelling reason to leave his situation in Los Angeles. At the official signing ceremony, he hinted that a dynasty could be in the making:
“I guess basketball-wise, I feel complete. I want to feel it again. It’s kind of an overwhelming feeling. I get goose bumps when I think about it, and as long as I continue to play professional basketball, I want to always feel that. The way I feel during the summer, I always want to feel that. If we can win six, seven, eight, nine, 10 championships in a row, I want to experience that.”
While talk of 10 straight championships may be mere hyperbole, theres no reason the Lakers cant run off a repeat or better with their current lineup. In fact, with the teams signing of Ron Artest the lineup may be better than a year ago. Artest brings not only his infamous swagger and intensity, but an element of toughness and versatility that Ariza lacked. Such was Odoms commitment to the Lakers is that even during his free agency, he helped recruit Artest to sign with the team:
“I spoke to Ron two days before he signed, and I told him how important I think it is for him to come here. Because I know how hard he works, he needs to experience basketball at its best, at the highest level, and he needs to become a Laker. Two days after that, he signed.”
Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak was understandably elated at Odom’s return:
“Three or four months ago, I didn’t think it could be possible that we could basically bring this team back in whole. Lamar had a wonderful season that ended on the best possible note you could have, and Lamar had a lot of options. … Here it is, July 31, and we have brought back everybody that we wanted to bring back.”
Odom noted that Los Angeles was home to his family, and he never really wanted to play elsewhere:
“I didn’t want my kids to have to change schools — just the little things. I’m comfortable here. I’ve been here since I was’ years old. I’m proud to be playing for what I think is the most popular brand in sports.

Tips On Beating Your Larger Retail Business Competitors
If you are running a small business then you realize just how trying difficult economic times can be. While you want to make an impact with your advertising, the limitations of budget seem to squash your ideas and make you think that advertising just simply isn’t worth the money.
It is often difficult for companies to find the perfect balance between advertising and the money that it will cost them to do so. Giving the state of the current economy, there is no time better than the present to advertise your business. During these times it is the advertising that will bring attention to your business and get the customers shopping once again.
There are many wonderful ways that you can build up your business, even on the smallest of budgets. These methods are perfect for advertising your business and keeping your business in the minds of those in your community.
Advertising your business with your company name and logo is one of the best methods that you can use. Although it is nearly impossible for a smaller business to keep up with the prices and sales that larger chain stores can provide, you will be surprised at how many consumers will choose your business instead since it has a personal feel, as well as a trust worthy and reliable one. One way that you can accomplish this is by distributing promotional products, promotional magnets, hanging fliers and utilizing business cards. All these methods are very inexpensive and will make a large impact on your business.
These methods of advertising will work wonderfully to bring exposure to your business, and they will even bring in a whole new group of consumers. Promotional products and fliers make a consumer feel as if they know, without even stepping foot into your shop, and they will be more inclined to do business with you because of this feeling of familiarity. By using your business name and logo in your promotional advertising, you are allowing others to become familiar with them and that will translate into a feeling of comfort with your business.
During these tough economic times corporate gifts are a great way to let your major clients know how much you appreciate their business. To shop from a large variety of business gifts log onto www.prodpromo.com.
Bobby Lashley Seeks To Combine Pro Wrestling And MMA
Not long after his demolition of Japanese pop culture icon Bob Sapp, former WWE superstar turned MMA fighter Bobby Lashley announced that he had signed a deal to return to full time professional wrestling competition with the US #2 promotion TNA. Lashley’s last in-ring pro wrestling appearance came in Mexico on a show for Lucha Libre promotion AAA.
Reports suggest, however that hes not giving up his MMA career. In interviews prior to the TNA signing Lashley indicated that he was leaving the door open to return to pro wrestling for its significant financial upside, while remaining committed to his shoot fighting efforts. Lashley trains in Florida with the prestigious American Top Team, and ran his record to 4-0 with his victory over Sapp in late June. A press release issued by TNA this morning further validated his suggestions that he planned to do both sports. Lashey himself is quoted as saying:
I want to do both because I can. TNA is giving me the opportunity to compete in both sports which I have a passion for. I will bring MMA fans to wrestling and wrestling fans to MMA
TNA President Dixie Carter also praised Lashley in announcing the signing:
This is a great opportunity for Bobby to do something that has never been done before. He is the perfect ambassador for both sports. We are excited to have him join TNA, he is a true star that brings so much to the table as a member of our roster.
TNAs claims that Lashley is the first active MMA fighter to compete full time in pro wrestling, however, is nothing but hyperbole. Its very common in Japan, though the Japanese fans for whatever reason are better able to compartmentalize an athlete competing in shoot fights like MMA while simultaneously appearing in worked (eg: pre-determined) pro wrestling contests. In fact, Josh Barnett, originally slated to face Fedor Emelianenko at the ill fated Affliction: Trilogy event still makes several appearances a year for Antonio Inokis Inoki Genome Federation (IGF) promotion. Lashley isnt even the first to pull the feat in the US, though hes definitely the highest profile fighter/wrester to turn the trick since MMAs overwhelming boom in popularity. Dan The Beast Severn at one point simultaneously held the UFC heavyweight title and the NWA heavyweight title in pro wrestling.
Lashley left the WWE in early 2008 under some degree of mystery and a hint of controversy. He indicated at the time that his departure was not of his own volition but due to circumstances beyond his control. Making this assertion more curious was the fact that Lashley had been used in high profile storylines by the WWE and was very popular among fans. The plot thickened when it was reported that unlike most wrestlers leaving the promotion Lashley wasnt subject to a standard non-compete agreement. Speculation at this point suggested that he may have left in response to a racial incident, a theory given more validity when WWE writer (and former member of the Fabulous Freebirds tag team) Michael Hayes was suspended for a racial slur. Neither Lashley nor the WWE has ever confirmed the reason for his departure.
At the time he was released from the WWE, Lashley began training for MMA building on an extensive background of amateur wrestling from both college and the military. The UFC took a pass on Lashley due to the perception that they couldnt market him successfully so soon after Brock Lesnars debut. Lashley certainly has the physical gifts to compete at the highest level in MMA at 63 and 250 lbs. Some even suggest that he may have more potential than Lesnar due to a possible edge in speed and agility. Lesnars recent unification of the UFC heavyweight title and amazing surge in mainstream popularity may give the promotion reason to take a second look at Lashley”they need credible opponents for their new heavyweight champion, but have to be careful not to put him in a position where his inexperience in certain components of MMA wont be exploited lest they kill the proverbial golden goose.

Live Music Or Hire A Function Band?
Hiring a function band for your next major event or social function is more important than you may believe. Whether it’s a wedding reception, business convention or birthday party having the right function band playing live music can transform your routine event into the social event of the season.
A function band can create and make your party turn from good to excellent and by providing top-notch quality entertainment you can make sure that people will not forget even for years to come. This can be achieved if you have invited the perfect band, and of course willing to listen and follow your easy instructions.
Word of mouth is the best advertisement and this is especially true when it comes to hiring a function band to perform for your special gathering. Recommendations from friends and colleagues are a wonderful resource to use if you want to find a great band, so ask around!
Maybe you can set up a schedule with them whenever they can present you with something that they perform, but if there is really no chance of performing live, asking for their demo video would be the next best thing to do. It is necessary that you know how this particular band performs. You of course, want this band to sound amazingly awesome, but look excellent as well.
Ask the function band representative or manager for their prices to play at events and for the songs that they can play during the expected party. You should only hire a band that possesses professionalism towards negotiations. If this band does not have something written, then forget about them and just look for another one. Often, a non-refundable 10-20% amount will be charged to ensure that they will come on the expected date and time.
Also, make sure that the function band can play requests from the audience. Most of them would as long as you give them enough time to prepare for everything.
You may want to see their equipment as well. Check that their equipment is adequate and of course safe. It is very important that they are aware and practice safety precautions and make sure that they will follow them carefully, for instance; no loose wiring should be exposed.
Find out what sort of clothes they wear during a live performance. If the costume or attire that the function band is wearing is a little out of place, you can suggest something that they can wear that will go with the theme of the event.
The band should arrive at least an hour before the event begins to set up their equipment and perform a sound check so the sound engineer can adjust the bands levels appropriately. The last thing you want is a room full of people deafened by the squeaks and squeals of feedback. It is also important to go over the events of the function with the band leader and review the set list with the band to make sure there is nothing in it that you do not want them to play.
All eyes will be on the function band when they take the stage. Do take a little extra time to go over the details when they arrive. Your band choice could make your function the event of the year and make your event a talking point for weeks afterward!
